Here’s a fun challenge. What’s the cheapest car on your local craigslist that has less than 30,000 miles on it? And what’s the best that can still qualify as cheap?

I actually thought of the idea when I saw this rare Suzuki SX4 with 30k on Facebook Marketplace for only $6,000! It’s even got a 5 speed. Sure you do end up with a Suzuki SX4, but newish car for cheap ! I also might have got sucked in by the classy subtle blue color.

Or you could get this very nice blue Forte with 30k exactly for only $10,500. It’s an automatic, but this is a very nice car in nearly new condition. Plus, I’m a sucker for blue.

It is maybe bending the rules in your usual fashion but the problem is you still have a Taurus. But man $1,000 is so cheap for a functioning 100k car.

So after wading through a bunch of inaccurate or scammy crap, I think this is it for Boston Craigslist:

2009 Kia Rio SX (17844 miles) V.G Condition $3000

Of course I’m not sure a ~ 12 year old Rio can really be considered new, and it certainly can’t be considered good.

If we limit it to 2017 and newer, we are looking at this Fiesta:

2019 Ford Fiesta 4K $10990 (2019 Ford Fiesta 4K)

Not terrible for a 2019 car with fewer than 5k miles, though I’m not sure I trust a dealer who doesn’t even know how to take photos.

But let’s find something “good”? That’s a bit harder. There’s a Volt and Kona that don’t look terrible, but I’m eye ing this Mini Clubman (manual for those who care ) :

Ahh well that was brief and frustrating.  I thought I’d adjusted my filters to get around all the dealer spam, but I could no.  Too much noise (dealers posting cars for the down payment amount, etc) not enough actual cars for sale.

Well the Rio is a lot of car for $3,000 when you factor in future security. I left it up to you guys to define “new.” That Fiata is pretty tempting but I could never buy one in a drab color. I might end up taking the Clubman (crowd gasps) despite the inaccuracy of the name.

Yeah same. I put a minimum mileage of 1000 to get rid of some of the terrible attempts at odo numbers and set a minimum price of a few grand to get rid of downpayments.

Omg finding something that fits takes some patience. How about a nice fixed Dirty Diesel Passat? Just fit with 29k miles.

There’s also a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage with a manual(!),13k miles for $8500. I think that wins in my area but no one needs to own one of those tin cans.

I would take the diesel for sure, even at 10 grand, over the mirage. That's some low mileage for such a good car.

What’s wrong with an SX4? A lady friend I had in university had a father who was an autojournalist and often had cars home. He would let his daughter use them once and awhile and I remember taking a few trips with her when her dad had a burnt-orange SX4 hatchback on loan. Was a great little car!

Hmmm, 30,000 miles is about 48,000kms.....let’s see.

How about a 2015 Smart ForTwo with only 15,000kms (9300 miles) for $8000 CAD? :D

Holy crap that's perfect AND cheap! I really want one. AND it's legal in the US. Driving cross country for me isn't ideal right now for anyone trying to get it home to Georgia, however.

If you wanted a Smart, that's a great one to buy. And pretty cheap too. There really isn't anything wrong with the SX4 but I also have no experience with them whatsoever. Seems like a perfectly fine car, if a bit unremarkable. You can get higher mileage cars with Bluetooth for cheaper though, which would be safer and about as reliable while depreciating less.

Ok, I completely failed to find anything new that wasn’t a CVTragic Nissan, but I did find a couple low mileage things that were interesting.

How about a 1995 Econoline with a 351 V8 for $6999?

The driver’s seat is ripped but otherwise it’s mint.

Or, a 1983 Chevy S10 with a V6, manual, and 4WD ? $9999 with 23850 miles.

“as new” still counts. The S10 is overpriced but a manual and that color combo is excellent. I actually like the van more than I should of it weren’t creep spec white. They had a  good dark blue color that I much prefer

Spoiler alert... it’s actually not.  My stepbrother had one, albeit a 1982 model, and it was abominable. I borrowed it to move once. I got into it to bring it back to him once we were done, pushed the clutch pedal to the floor, and.... it stayed there.  I called him to let him know what happened and his response was, “AGAIN??”. Apparently there was a plastic piece that was known to fail in the clutch, and sure enough it had broken again.  He’d replaced it 11 times.
